Based on Tom Sniegoski's popular novels, this miniseries focuses on angels who have fallen from grace and the one being who can help them back to Heaven.
Last year, ABC Family added some edge to their family-oriented programming, first with the highly addictive series "Kyle XY" followed by "Fallen," a two-hour original movie about the angels that secretly dwell among humans.
Based on the novels by Tom Sniegoski, "Fallen" focuses on Aaron (Paul Wesley), a teenage orphan who finally has found a good home with Lori (Chelah Horsdal) and Tom Corbett (Russell Porter). Aaron looks and acts like a regular kid, going to classes during the day and attending wrestling practice after school.
On Aaron's 18th birthday, though he wants nothing more than a quiet day with his new family, strange things start to happen, beginning with his beloved dog Gabriel. For some inexplicable reason, Aaron can now hear Gabriel's thoughts as clearly as if he were speaking aloud.
The confused teen also discovers that he can freeze time and comprehend other languages, a talent which confuses and frightens his psychologist and friend Dr. Micahel Jonas (Malcolm Stewart). Before Dr. Jonas can offer some real insights, however, he is killed in an unexplained fire.
Aaron finally gets some answeres from Zeke (Tom Skerritt), a homeless man who knows more about the teenager than he knows about himself. Aaron, according to his new friend, is a Nephilim, the offspring of a fallen angel and a human woman. Zeke, as it turns out, is a fallen angel himself and has performed some pretty heinous acts to survive as long as he has.
God, unfortunately, doesn't tolerate the existence of the Nephilim and authorizes a group of angels called the "Powers" to find and destroy all of the half-breeds. A prophecy says, however, that one Nephilim will come who has the power to redeem the fallen angels and return them to Heaven.
Ironically, Camael (Rick Worthy), perhaps the most ruthless of the Powers, befriends Aaron and believes that he could be the one that legends refer to. After centuries of ruthlessly hunting and killing half-breeds, Camael takes this one literally under his wing and helps him fulfill his destiny.
On August 3, things heat up again for Aaron as ABC Family presents a "Fallen" trilogy weekend. Starting with an encore of the original two-hour movie on Friday, Aaron's adventures continue during four more episodes on Saturday and Sunday.
In those new installments, Aaron learns more about his role as "The Redeemer". Secrets also are revealed about someone who is quite close to his heart. Aaron must do battle with Lucifer (Bryan Cranston), who was an angel before he challenged the authority of the Lord.
Like Matt Dallas, the star of "Kyle XY," Paul Wesley has to carry much of the weight of "Fallen" on his shoulders, but he rises brilliantly to the occassion. Aaron, like Kyle, has a lot of questions about his past, but the answers that both of them find in their respective series often come at a terrible price.
With mature programming like "Fallen,"ABC Family is making itself a force to be reckoned with.
